The Oglethorpe men's tennis team delivered a very solid performance Friday afternoon, defeating the visiting Brooklyn Bulldogs 9-0 at the Downing Howell Courts in their final scheduled non-conference match of the campaign. The Stormy Petrels improved to 5-8 on the season overall with the win, and have now won two matches in a row.
The Petrels got things off to a fantastic start in the doubles portion of the competition, dropping only two games in the three matches combined. The top doubles team of junior Rhys Richardson and sophomore Jacob Bertram won their match 8-1, while the No. 2 tandem of freshman Dustin Bowie and junior Matthew Magee won by the same scoreline. The No. 3 team of sophomore Michael Santaloci and freshman Zoe Raymond swept their match 8-0, giving Oglethorpe a 3-0 lead headed to the singles portion of the competition.
In singles, Richardson took the No. 1 match 6-4, 6-1 to set the tone, and the Petrels lost just three combined games over the other five matches. Bowie earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2, while Santaloci swept the No. 3 match 6-0, 6-0. Junior Matthew Magee won by the same scoreline at No. 4, while freshman Jesse Storr took the No. 5 match 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore John Carter also won 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 match.
"It was great to see Jesse Storr and John Carter take advantage of their opportunities to play," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell. "It shows that we have good depth on this team. I believe this kind of match was good for us headed into a tough weekend of SAA play."
The Petrels travel to Tennessee on Saturday to take on No. 18 Sewanee at 11 a.m. Eastern. After that, they'll continue to Danville, Kentucky, to go against Centre at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
