The Oglethorpe men's tennis team ended it's spring break trip on a high note Wednesday afternoon in Lakeland, Florida, picking up a resounding 8-1 victory over Oneonta at the Kelly Recreation Complex.
The Stormy Petrels got off to a great start, sweeping the doubles matches. Sophomore Dustin Bowie and senior Judd Motz won at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. At No. 2 doubles, junior Richard Johnson and freshman Walker Benson prevailed 8-4. Sophomore Zoe Raymond and freshman Calvin Schneider picked up a hard-fought 9-7 win at No. 3 to give the Petrels a 3-0 lead.
In singles play, the outcome was never really in doubt, with the Petrels winning in straight sets at all positions except at #1, where the Red Dragons picked up their sole point.
Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell was pleased with the team's play today and over the spring break trip, saying, "It was great to finish on a positive note with a solid win. We had to battle through the doubles and then wore them down in singles. We are very pleased that freshman Walker Benson went 6-0 for the trip at the Nos. 3 and 4 singles position. We also think we have found some good doubles pairings."
The victory improved the team's record on the trip to 4-2, and it's overall season record to 6-3. The squad will now get some well-deserved time off before their next match on Wednesday, March 14 against Covenant at 4 p.m. on the Howell Courts. The Petrels will have one more non-conference contest, against Piedmont, after that before diving into SAA play over the latter half of March into April.
