The Oglethorpe men's tennis team cruised to a 7-2 win over Piedmont Thursday afternoon in Demorest, improving their record to 9-5 on the season.
The Stormy Petrels took two out of three doubles matches, with freshman Walker Benson and junior Richard Johnson winning 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, while the duo of junior Michael Santaloci and freshman Calvin Schneider picked up an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles. The Stormy Petrels went into singles play ahead 2-1 after they dropped the No. 1 doubles match.
In singles play, senior Judd Motz was forced to retire after splitting the first two sets. The Petrels were able to win the rest of the singles matches in straight sets, though. Sophomore Dustin Bowie picked up a win at No. 2 singles, and Johnson won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3. Benson breezed to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4. At No. 5, sophomore Zoe Raymond bested his opponent 6-2, 6-3. Santaloci rounded out the scoring with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6.
"It was a nice win for the men to get back on the winning track after after the tough 5-4 loss to Rhodes last weekend," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell. "Dustin Bowie got a needed win, and our depth showed at Nos. 3 through 6. We will be battle-tested as we head into our matches with Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps this weekend."
Those two matches are set to be on the road. The Petrels travel to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on Birmingham-Southern Friday evening at 7 p.m. Eastern. After that, they'll head to Jackson, Mississippi, for a showdown with Millsaps Sunday at 1 p.m.
