The Oglethorpe men's tennis team fell to No. 40 Millsaps on Sunday afternoon by the score of 5-1 in a match that was played to decision in Jackson, Mississippi. The Stormy Petrels dropped the first two doubles matches at Nos. 1 and 2, but the duo of junior Michael Santaloci and freshman Calvin Schneider picked up an 8-6 win at No. 3 to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into singles play.
In singles, the Majors were just too strong, as they picked up straight set wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 6, which gave them a 5-1 lead, clinching the match. The Petrels were down a set at Nos. 1 and 5, but freshman Walker Benson was up a set at No. 4 before the match was abandoned with the outcome of the dual match decided.
Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell had this to say after the match: "This was a tough match against a very good team. I think maybe yesterday's effort took a little out of our legs, while Millsaps was fresh. They just overpowered us at most positions and we had no answers. We'll look to bounce back to finish the regular season at home this week."
The Petrels dropped to 10-6 overall and 2-3 in SAA play with the result. They will conclude the regular season with three consecutive home matches this week, starting with LaGrange on Tuesday. They'll celebrate the career of Judd Motz during Senior Day festivities prior to the contest. The Petrels will then host Centre and Sewanee on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, to finish out the regular season.
