The men and women of Oglethorpe competed at the largest track meet on the East Coast this season with some personal records while struggling at other events at the Southern Invitational at Birmingham, Ala. Over 70 teams, from all NCAA and NAIA divisions, hailing from as far away as Alaska, gave the Petrels their stiffest challenge of the season.
Numerous Oglethorpe athletes had personal highlights. Andre Smith, Jacquawn Lockhart, Dessa Raymond, Mallory Arp, Amaya Ford, Norman Cervantes and Alexander Johnson all ran personal bests, while Luq Mohammed had the best race of his career in an outstanding 400-meter dash. Raymond and Lockhart won their races in the 100 meters, while Katy Galli, Blake Jones and Bonny Wagener made the finals in their events.
The men's relay teams also showed great promise, running season-best times against Division I ompetition in the 4 x100 and mile relays, while the women's 4x100 team of Ky'Laine Rogers, Aisha Atwater, Katy Galli and Sherry Blystone just missed their own school record.
Next up, crosstown-rival Emory at their invitational relay in two weeks.
