Track and field gets indoor season started at BSC Panther Indoor Invitational

The Oglethorpe track and field teams got their indoor season started Friday with a trip to Birmingham, Alabama, for the BSC Panther Indoor Invitational. The men's team finished 18th at the meet overall and fourth among the six Division III schools competing at the Birmingham Crossplex.

The men were led by senior Rodrigo Meade, who finished fourth in the mile run with a time of 4 minutes, 28.28 seconds. That put him second among Division III runners and gave the team the five points that put them onto the leaderboard.

Freshman Thomas Ridley ran well in the event, too, finishing 10th overall and third among Division III athletes with a mark of 4:38.09.

The Stormy Petrels also got a solid performance from freshman John Griner in the 800-meter run. He finished ninth overall and first among Division III runners with a personal-best time of 2:01.5.

On the women's side, sophomore Sydney Payne competed in the shot put and put up a personal-best throw. She recorded a toss of 33 feet, 8.75 inches to finish 18th overall and seventh among Division III athletes.

The men's and women's track and field teams will continue to prepare for the bulk of the indoor season leading up to winter break. They'll return to action back at the Birmingham Crossplex on Sunday, Jan. 20, when they head there for the Emory Crossplex Invitational.
