The SAA named Oglethorpe freshman Jacob Hadden as the SAA Men's Runner of the Week Tuesday for his efforts in the team's second-place finish at the Georgia NCAA Division III Invitational Friday in Mount Berry. In his first collegiate race, Hadden paced the Petrels and finished in the top five at the event.
Hadden came in fifth among the 79-runner field with a time of 27 minutes, 21.8 seconds. That mark set the Oglethorpe freshman record in the men's eight-kilometer race, and put him within 30 seconds of the winning time of Emory's Marty Pimentel. In addition to the freshman school record, Hadden also posted the fourth-fastest eight-kilometer time in school history with that mark.
"I'm super proud of Jacob earning SAA Runner of the Week in his first meet as a collegiate athlete here at Oglethorpe," said Oglethorpe head coach Kirk Shellhouse. "I was very surprised and excited to see how he performed this past weekend with some challenging competition in his first time running the 8K. He is a hard worker and determined to have success. As a whole, we are very excited to see what the future holds for this young team."
Hadden and the rest of the Petrels now get set to face off against Division I and Division II competition when they travel to Greenville, South Carolina, for the Furman Invitational Saturday morning.
