Sophomore Jacob Hadden of the Oglethorpe men's cross country team earned an individual spot at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in Winneconne, Wisconsin, as announced Sunday by the NCAA committee. It marked the first time that a Stormy Petrel qualified for the national cross country meet since Doug Pack did so in 1994.
Hadden finished 11th at the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regionals in Mount Berry, Georgia, on Saturday, marking the best finish by a Stormy Petrel at a regional meet since Pack in 1993. The Oglethorpe sophomore came in with a time of 26 minutes, 6.8 seconds on the 8-kilometer course at Berry's Clara Bowl. That put him fifth among runners not on teams qualifying for the national meet, clinching Hadden an automatic slot in the national field. The top seven runners from each region not on teams qualifying for nationals earned the 56 individual spots.
The 2018 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships are set to take place at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne on Saturday. The men's race will get underway at 1:15 p.m. EST.
