The women's basketball team fell to Rhodes College on Pinholster Court on Friday night, 59-52. The Petrels shook off a slow start to race out to a 12 point first half lead before the Lynx used a series of spurts to reclaim the lead and pull away for the win.
In a game of runs, the Lynx got things started by scoring the game's first 8 points. Following an Aaron Nester timeout, though, Oglethorpe responded with the next 13 to jump in front by five. The Petrels then extended the lead all the way up to 12 with the score 28-16 with 5:03 left in the half. Rhodes countered with an 11-2 burst to close the half and send the teams into the locker room with Oglethorpe holding a 30-27 advantage.
The squads traded three-balls at the outset of the second half and Oglethorpe led 33-30 before Rhodes went on their decisive spurt to take control of the game. The Lynx put together an 11-0 run to match their earlier largest lead of 8 with the score 41-33. The Petrels scratched back to get within two points but, again, the Lynx responded, this time with back-to-back three's to push the margin back to 8 with under three to play. Oglethorpe managed one more push but Rhodes handled their business at the free throw line, making 15-of-17 on the night, to close out the game.
The Petrels held Rhodes to 31% shooting on the night but struggled themselves through a 7-for-30 (23%) second half shooting effort to thwart their comeback chances. Sarah Jones led three Petrels in double-figures with 13 points and 5 rebounds. Morghan Brandon added 12 points, 7 rebounds and three steals while Katie Weeks netted 11 and grabbed 8 boards.
Oglethorpe is now 3-10 on the season and will face Millsaps College on Pinholster Court this sunday at 1:00 p.m.
