The Oglethorpe women's basketball team fell on the road to Berry Saturday evening, 74-48. The loss drops the Lady Petrels to 3-12 on the season, 1-3 in SAA play.
In the first half, Berry exploded out of the gate, going on a 19-2 run over the first eight minutes of the half. However, Oglethorpe responded with a monster run of their own, outscoring the Lady Vikings 22-5 over the next nine minutes to tie the game, 24-24, with three minutes remaining in the half. Then with a minute remaining in the half, freshman Emily Buck hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Petrels their first lead of the game, 31-30. They held that lead going into the locker room for halftime.
In the second half, Oglethorpe held in for awhile. They still held their one-point lead, 38-37, with 16 minutes remaining. Berry went on a mini-run to take a 45-40 lead, which was followed by a four-point run from Oglethorpe, cutting the lead back to one. However, from there, Berry slowly started to pull away.
With 3:48 left, Berry led the Lady Petrels 58-48, and Oglethorpe would not score again after that, allowing Berry to cruise home with the 74-48 victory.
Berry outshot the Lady Petrels 46-to-38 percent and outrebounded Oglethorpe 47-33. Senior center Sarah Giles was the only Lady Petrel in double figures, scoring 15 points and grabbing six rebounds.
The Lady Petrels will next be in action on Friday, when they travel to Danville, Ky., to take on Centre at 6 p.m.
