Women's Basketball Loses at Rhodes, 63-48

The Oglethorpe women's basketball team fell at Rhodes Sunday afternoon in Memphis, Tenn., 63-48. The loss drops them to 5-18 overall, 3-9 in SAA play.

In the first half, the Lady Petrels got out to a four-point lead with 12:35 remaining, 11-7. But from that point, the home-standing Lynx embarked on a 15-5 run over the next 6:30, turning the game around and taking a six-point lead, 22-16. Oglethorpe got their halftime deficit down to three points, 24-21.

The Lynx began the second half on a back-breaking 22-8 run over the first nine minutes of the period. When the run was over, Rhodes led the Lady Petrels 46-29 and Oglethorpe was in big trouble.

The Lady Petrels went on a few small runs during the remainder of the game, but never got closer than 12 points. After Oglethorpe cut the lead to 15 with 4:32 left, Rhodes scored back-to-back baskets to take a 61-41 lead with 1:49 remaining and put the game out of reach.

Though neither team shot the ball especially well, the Lady Petrels actually outshot Rhodes 29-to-27 percent. However, Rhodes made 30 free throws over the game and shot 79 percent, while Oglethorpe made just 12 and shot 71 percent. In addition, Oglethorpe turned the ball over a whopping 27 times while Rhodes committed 18 turnovers.

The Lady Petrels had two players in double figures on the afternoon. Freshmen Gabby Cole and Emily Buck both scored 10 points. Cole added three steals while Buck recorded two.

Oglethorpe returns to the floor Friday night when they take on Birmingham-Southern at 6 p.m. It will be Senior Night, and the athletic department will honor seniors Sarah Giles and Mareva Bone before the game.
