  • Women's Basketball Advances to SAA Championship Game with 75-54 Win over Berry

    The top-seeded Oglethorpe women's basketball team defeated the No. 4 seed Berry Vikings 75-54 in the SAA Tournament semifinals Saturday evening at Dorough Field House, advancing to the SAA Tournament championship game for the first time in their history and to a conference championship game for the first time since 2009. The victory also improved the squad to 20-7 on the season, giving the Petrels 20 wins in a season for the first time since that year, as well.
  • LeGate, Richey Earn SAA Awards; Six Women's Basketball Players Named to All-SAA Teams

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team received a bevy of awards Friday morning as the SAA league office revealed their All-SAA teams and postseason awards, as voted by the league's coaches. Freshman center Savannah LeGate took home both SAA Player of the Year and SAA Newcomer of the Year honors, as well as being named to the All-SAA First Team, while Head Coach Alex Richey nabbed SAA Coach of the Year accolades. In addition, five Stormy Petrels earned All-SAA Honorable Mention.
  • Women's Basketball Starts SAA Tournament on Right Foot with 61-40 Win over Millsaps

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team got their SAA Tournament run underway on Friday night with a comprehensive 61-40 victory over No. 8 seed Millsaps. The victory means the top-seeded Stormy Petrels will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, where they'll take on No. 4 seed Berry. The win also improved the Petrels to 19-7 on the season.
  • Women's Basketball Closes Regular Season with 74-65 Loss at Berry

    The Oglethorpe women’s basketball team closed their regular season in Mount Berry against the in-state rival Berry Vikings Saturday. Unfortunately, the Stormy Petrels failed to come away with the victory falling to the Vikings 74-65. Despite the loss, the Petrels were already locked into the No. 1 seed in next weekend’s SAA Tournament, an event which they will host at Dorough Field House Feb. 23 through 25.
  • Women's Basketball Claims First-Ever Outright League Regular-Season Crown with 65-52 Win at Centre

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team clinched the first outright league regular season title in the program's history Sunday afternoon in Danville, Kentucky, defeating the homestanding Centre Colonels 65-52 to ensure themselves sole possession of the 2017-18 SAA crown, along with the No. 1 seed and hosting duties for the SAA Tournament Feb. 23 through 25. The victory improved the Stormy Petrels to 18-6 on the season overall and 11-2 in SAA play.
  • Women's Basketball Clinches Share of First SAA Regular Season Title with Victory at Sewanee

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team clinched at least a share of the first SAA regular season title in its history Friday night in Tennessee, as they knocked off the homestanding Sewanee Tigers 77-64 to improve to 10-2 in league play and 17-6 overall. It marks the second conference regular season title in program history, and the first since the 2008-09 team shared the SCAC regular season and Eastern Division titles with DePauw. It also marks the first time since that season the the Stormy Petrels have accrued double-digit wins within league play.
  • Poor Second Half Shooting Performance Sinks Women's Basketball in 59-50 Loss to Rhodes

    The Oglethorpe women’s basketball team fought hard on Sunday afternoon, but came up short in the end, losing to the Rhodes Lynx at Dorough Field House, 59-50. The Stormy Petrels were winning at halftime 32-26. However, the Petrels only recorded five points in the third period, which allowed the Lynx to tie the game at 37-37 entering the final quarter. Late in the game, the Lynx went on an 8-0 run to take a 56-46 lead with 1:01 left to play. Despite the loss, though, the Petrels remain in first place in the SAA with a 2-game lead over their closest competitors in Hendrix. The Warriors dropped a game at Berry on Sunday, keeping them two games back of Oglethorpe. The Petrels dropped to 16-6 on the season overall and 9-2 in the conference.
  • Women's Basketball Pulls Away for 77-57 Win over Hendrix, Extends SAA Lead to Two Games

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team pulled away from the visiting Hendrix Warriors Friday evening at Dorough Field House, defeating them 77-57 and moving two games ahead of their closest competitor for the SAA lead with four games remaining. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 16-5 on the season overall and 9-1 in SAA play, while dropping second-place Hendrix to 7-2 in league play on the year.
  • Women's Basketball Blows Out Birmingham-Southern to Maintain First Place in League

    On Sunday afternoon, the Oglethorpe women's basketball team hosted Birmingham-Southern at Dorough Field House. The Stormy Petrels dominated early in the contest, shooting over 50 percent from the field in the first quarter, and 43 percent in the second. This allowed the Petrels to double the Panthers in points by halftime, 44-22. The Petrels held on to their impressive lead in the final two quarters, securing a 62-44 victory over their SAA rival. The victory increased the Oglethorpe winning streak out to seven games. The Petrels improved to 15-5 on the season and remain in sole possession of first place in the SAA with a 7-1 record. 
  • Long's Late Free Throws Give Women's Basketball 60-59 Victory over Millsaps
    January 26, 2018
    The Oglethorpe women’s Basketball team capped off their game Friday night at Dorough Field House by winning in thrilling fashion. The Stormy Petrels had the ball with eight seconds remaining in the game, trailing the Millsap Majors 59-58. Sophomore guard Sydney Long missed on a 3-point attempt, but she was fouled during the shot with only 1.5 seconds left. Long needed to make two of her three free throws in order to seal a Petrels victory. She missed her first free throw, but connected on her final two shots, giving the Petrels a 60-59 win after Millsaps missed a wild shot at the end. The Petrels improved to 14-5 on the season and 7-1 in the SAA, allowing them to maintain sole possession of first place in the league. 
  • National Girls and Women in Sports Day to Be Held Feb. 4 in Dorough Field House/Schmidt Center

    The Oglethorpe athletic department and the Oglethorpe Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day Sunday, Feb. 4. The event will take place in the Traditions lobby of Dorough Field House and in the Schmidt Recreation Center. 
  • Women's Basketball Wins Fifth Consecutive Game, Defeats Birmingham-Southern 79-70

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team secured their fifth consecutive win and maintained sole possession of first place in the SAA with a 79-70 victory over Birmingham-Southern Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama. The Stormy Petrels led for the majority of the contest and held as much as a 14-point lead in the second half. The win improved them to 13-5 overall and 6-1 in SAA play, putting them two games up over their nearest conference competitors.
  • Women's Basketball Uses Big Fourth Quarter to Take Down Millsaps, 65-56
    January 19, 2018
    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team converted 6 of 10 field goal attempts and made 7 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter Friday night in Jackson, Mississippi, allowing them to outscore the homestanding Millsaps Majors 22-13 in the final period and pull away for a 65-56 victory at the Hangar Dome. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 12-5 on the season overall and 5-1 in SAA play. The latter mark means they maintain a 1-game lead for sole possession of first place in the conference.
  • Women's Basketball Vaults into Sole Possession of First Place in SAA with 53-44 Win over Centre
    January 14, 2018
    On Sunday afternoon, the Oglethorpe women’s basketball team welcomed their SAA rival Centre to Dorough Field House in a battle between a pair of first-place teams in the league. The Stormy Petrels entered halftime down 28-25, but they would quickly respond, outscoring the visiting Colonels 16-8 in the third quarter. The Colonels were able to tie the score up halfway through the fourth quarter, but the Petrels refused to allow the Centre to score for the final 5 minutes of play. The remarkable defense down the stretch allowed the Petrels to hold on for the 53-44 win. The result puts them at 11-5 on the season and 4-1 in the SAA, vaulting them into first place by themselves after Centre, Hendrix and Rhodes all lost on the day.
  • Women's Basketball Fights off Poor Shooting Performance to Earn Comeback Win over Sewanee

    The Oglethorpe women’s basketball team hosted the Sewanee Tigers at Dorough Field House on Friday night in Oglethorpe’s first home conference game of the new year. Things did not look good for the Stormy Petrels early, as they were down big at halftime, losing 28-16, while only managing to shoot 14 percent from the field. The Petrels were able to flip the momentum of the game in the second half, though, reducing the Tiger lead to 34-31 at the end of the third period. The Petrels then went on to outscore the Tigers 27-13 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. The late game push allowed the Petrels to win by 11, 58-47. The Petrels improved to 10-5 on the season overall and 3-1 in the SAA.
  • Women's Basketball Defeats Rhodes 77-66
    January 07, 2018
    The Oglethorpe women’s basketball team continued their road trip on Sunday afternoon, traveling from Conway, Arkansas, to Memphis, Tennessee, to face the SAA rival Rhodes Lynx. The Petrels refused to go home without a conference win and forced the Lynx to battle in each quarter. In the final quarter, the Petrels would pull away with their largest lead of the game, 14 points, and sealed their victory, 77-66. The Petrels improved to 9-5 on the season and 2-1 in SAA play.
  • Women's Basketball Falls on Late Shot at Hendrix

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team suffered a disappointing loss Friday night in Conway, Arkansas, as the homestanding Hendrix Warriors knocked down a shot with eight seconds remaining to go ahead for the final time in the game. A Stormy Petrel miss at the buzzer on the other end secured the 63-62 win for Hendrix in Oglethorpe's first SAA road contest of the season.
  • Women's Basketball Pulls Away for First Victory over Crosstown Rival Emory since 2011
    January 02, 2018
    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team used a 17-4 run in the third quarter to pull away from the crosstown rival Emory Eagles Tuesday evening at Dorough Field House and secure the program's first victory over their rivals since Nov. 15, 2011. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 8-4 on the season as they head into the bulk of SAA play starting this weekend.
  • Women's Basketball Can't Keep Up with Transylvania in Fourth, Falls 68-55
    December 29, 2017
    The Oglethorpe women’s basketball team returned to action on Thursday afternoon, traveling to Lexington, Kentucky, to face Transylvania Pioneers. The Petrels fought hard to put themselves ahead 46-45 at the end of the third quarter. However, in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers were able to pull away and win the game, 68-55. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 7-4 on the season. 
  • Savannah LeGate Named SAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week

    Freshman center Savannah LeGate was named the SAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Wednesday, becoming the first member of the Stormy Petrels to earn the honor from the league office this season.
  • Women's Basketball Hammers Emory and Henry 72-52, Earns Sweep of Holiday Inn Express and Suites Classic
    December 19, 2017
    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team completed a sweep of their Holiday Inn Express and Suites Classic on Tuesday, trouncing the visiting Emory and Henry Wasps 72-52. That result made the Stormy Petrels the only team to go 2-0 in the 4-team field which also featured Birmingham-Southern and Centenary (Louisiana). Oglethorpe jumped all over Emory and Henry in the first and fourth quarters, jumping out to a 28-10 lead after the opening period and holding the Wasps to just five points over the final 10 minutes.
  • Women's Basketball Routs Centenary 74-45 on Day 1 of Holiday Inn Express and Suites Classic

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team showed no signs of rust Monday after a 10-day layoff. The Stormy Petrels got their Holiday Inn Express and Suites Classic off to an excellent start with 74-45 blowout of Centenary (Louisiana). The result improved the Petrels to 6-3 on the season headed into their matchup with Emory and Henry to close the event out on Tuesday.
  • Women's Basketball Falls to Guilford in 77-75 Overtime Thriller
    December 07, 2017
    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team led Guilford late Thursday evening in Greensboro, North Carolina, but the homestanding Quakers hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime, then took the lead with 1:10 remaining in the extra period for a 77-75 victory over the Stormy Petrels. The defeat dropped the Petrels to 5-3 on the young season.
  • Women's Basketball Routs Pomona-Pitzer, 81-46, in McWilliams Classic Consolation Game

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team finished their stay in St. Louis with an outstanding performance Saturday evening in the McWilliams Classic consolation game, defeating Pomona-Pitzer 81-46 to improve to 5-2 on the season. The Stormy Petrels came out on fire after a tough game against No. 13 Washington on Friday, outscoring the Sagehens 27-9 in the first quarter and 50-16 over the opening half of play.
  • Women's Basketball Falls to No. 13 Washington (Missouri) in Hard-Fought McWilliams Classic Opener

    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team acquitted themselves well in their McWilliams Classic opener against the No. 13 Washington (Missouri) Bears, but fell in the end, dropping the contest, 90-79, to move to 4-2 on the young season. Both teams got off to a hot shooting start, but the nationally-ranked Bears pulled away in the third quarter on the first day of the 2-day tournament in St. Louis.
  • Women's Basketball Runs Away from Berry, 73-47, to Secure Win in SAA Opener
    November 29, 2017
    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team returned home Wednesday to face the Berry Vikings in the Petrels' first SAA matchup of the season. The Petrels continued their early-season dominance by defeating the Vikings, 73-47, at Dorough Field House. The Petrels were only ahead by nine points going into halftime, with the score 33-24.  The Petrels came out in the third quarter on fire, pushing their lead out to double digits. In that third quarter, the Petrels would outscore the Vikings 24-10 en route to their first conference win of the season. The win improved the Petrels to 4-1 on the young season, 1-0 in league play.
  • Women's Basketball Recovers to Defeat LaGrange, Split SAA-USA South Classic Games
    November 26, 2017
    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team came back from a tough loss on Saturday to beat the LaGrange Panthers on Sunday, 67-53, in Mount Berry and wrap up their stay at the SAA-USA South Classic. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 3-1 on the young season.
  • Women's Basketball Drops Tight One to Piedmont, 66-65, for First Loss of Season
    November 25, 2017
    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season Saturday at the SAA-USA South Classic in Mount Berry. They came back from as many as 11 points down in the third quarter to take a late lead against the Piedmont Lions, but it was Piedmont who came up with some big plays down the stretch to pull out the 66-65 victory.
  • Women's Basketball Trounces Agnes Scott, 70-28, to Improve to 2-0 on Season
    November 21, 2017
    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team quickly jumped out to a big lead and never looked back Tuesday night in Decatur, blowing out the homestanding Agnes Scott Scotties 70-28 to improve to 2-0 on the young season. The Stormy Petrels outscored Agnes Scott 21-5 in the first quarter and 26-6 in the second, giving themselves a 47-11 lead at the halftime break and allowing them to cruise to the 42-point victory.
  • Women's Basketball Opens Season with 86-48 Rout of Covenant
    November 17, 2017
    The Oglethorpe women's basketball team opened their season on an outstanding note on Friday night, leading by as many as 40 points en route to a comprehensive 86-48 victory over Covenant at Dorough Field House. The Stormy Petrels outscored the visiting Scots 68-34 over the final three quarters of the contest, including a 21-9 margin in the second quarter and a 22-8 bulge in the fourth, pulling away for a blowout win after Covenant had trailed by just four points at the end of the first quarter.
