Women's Golf Finishes Tied for Ninth at Callaway Gardens Collegiate

The Oglethorpe women's golf team started their spring season with a 35-over-par 327 Monday at the Callaway Gardens Lake View course. That put them in a tie for ninth place after Day 1 of the Callaway Gardens Collegiate Invitational, 29 strokes back of leaders Methodist. As it turned out, that was where they would stay, as rain canceled the second and final round on Tuesday, making the event an 18-hole tournament that entirely rested on Monday's round.

The Stormy Petrels were led on the day by senior Sophia German and sophomore Ana Garcia, both of whom posted rounds of 6-over 79 to put them in a tie for 18th, 13 strokes back of Methodist's Johnna Beehner, who fired an impressive 7-under 66 for the opening round, for the lead. Sophomore Mara Tiger posted a 7-over 80 in Monday's opening round, putting her in a tie for 24th, while junior Hailey Willman rounded out the Oglethorpe scorecard with a 16-over 89. Freshman Angel Sanchez had posted an 81, but was disqualified from the round for a scorecard error.

Freshman Alivia Mattiace put up a solid number while golfing as an individual, coming in tied for 33rd after a 9-over 82. Freshman Emma Meadows put up an 11-over 84 while also golfing as an individual.

Methodist won the tournament with a 6-over 298 on Monday. Rhodes finished in second place, four strokes back, while Washington and Lee was an additional stroke back of that in third. Centre finished in fourth, six back, while Berry and Birmingham-Southern tied for fifth, 19 strokes back.

The Petrels will be back in action when they host the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational March 16 through 18 at the Jekyll Island Golf Club.
