Women's Golf Finishes Tied for Sixth at MCC Intercollegiate

The Oglethorpe women's golf team knocked 11 strokes off their first round score Sunday at the Montgomery Country Club Women's Intercollegiate, posting a 24-over-par 312 to improve to a tie for sixth place at the event, coming in 22 strokes back of champions Rhodes. 

Sophomore Angel Sanchez enjoyed the best individual round of the tournament on Sunday, firing a 2-under 70 to vault 23 spots up the leaderboard into 10th place. Her 8-over 152 overall put her eight strokes back of Centre's Bailey Plourde, the individual medalist. 

Junior Mara Tiger posted a 14-over 158 for the weekend to finish in 22nd place. Junior Ana Garcia shot a 7-over 79 on the day to finish the tournament tied for 26th, posting a 17-over 161 for the tournament. Sophomore Alivia Mattiace finished the weekend tied for 33rd, while senior Hailey Willman came in tied for 41st.

Golfing as individuals, sophomore Emma Meadows finished 45th, while freshmen Graci Hallenbeck and Jazmyne Everett finished the weekend tied for 51st.

The Petrels finished tied with Huntingdon for sixth and the pair came in 15 ahead of eighth-place Piedmont. Rhodes took home the team title at 27-over 603, followed by Washington and Lee, Berry, Sewanee and Birmingham-Southern, the latter of whom finished five strokes ahead of the Petrels.

Oglethorpe will next be in action Oct. 7 and 8, when they travel to Lexington, Virginia, for the General's Invitational.

First Round Recap

The Oglethorpe women's golf team finished Day 1 at the Montgomery Country Club Women's Intercollegiate in seventh place Saturday in Alabama. The Stormy Petrels shot a 35-over-par 323 to come in 25 strokes back of leader Rhodes.

The Petrels were led on the day by junior Mara Tiger, who finished the round tied for 16th after a 6-over 78 on the day. That put her 10 strokes back of Emily Salamy of Rhodes, the 18-hole individual leader. Sophomore Alivia Mattiace finished the day tied for 26th with a 9-over 81, while sophomore Angel Sanchez and junior Ana Garcia both posted scored of 10-over 82. Senior Hailey Willman rounded out the Oglethorpe scorecard with a tie for 39th at 12-over 84. 

Golfing as individuals, sophomore Emma Meadows finished the day in a tie for 39th, freshman Graci Hallenbeck came in 50th, and freshman Jazmyne Everett tied for 51st.

The Petrels will be back in action on Sunday, when they head back out to the Montgomery Country Club for the tournament's final round.
