Women's Lacrosse Loses First-Ever Road Game, 18-4

The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team got another first out of the way Wednesday night as they embarked on their first-ever road trip. Unfortunately, they come home from Demorest, Ga., with a loss to Piedmont, 18-4.

The Lady Petrels fell behind 4-0 in the first four minutes of the game, and Piedmont scored all four of those goals in a three-minute span. Oglethorpe settled things down a bit after that rough opening, though, and with 12 minutes remaining in the first half, freshman midfielder Sydney Sparks fired a shot home for the Lady Petrels, cutting the Piedmont lead to 4-1.

However, the Lions completely dominated the remainder of the half. They scored seven goals in the final 12 minutes of the period, taking an 11-1 lead into the halftime break.

The second half featured a hat trick from freshman midfielder Michelle Vasques, who now leads the team in goals, having scored four of their seven on the season. Piedmont scored seven goals of their own in the second half, though, and the home-standing Lions went on to win 18-4.

The Lady Petrels found themselves outshot 33-11, including 27-10 in shots on goal. Piedmont scooped up 17 ground balls to 10 for Oglethorpe, while they came away with 16 draw controls to Oglethorpe's nine.

Vasques' three goals came on six shots, all of which found the target. Meanwhile, Sparks netted a goal and two assists.

Oglethorpe drops to 0-2 on the young season. They will next be in action on Sunday afternoon, when they welcome Centre to the new Oglethorpe Track and Field for their inaugural SAA contest.
