Women's Lacrosse Drops Home Game to Berry, 20-4
The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team fell in a home SAA contest to Berry Wednesday evening, 20-4, to fall to 0-3 in conference play on the season.
The two teams combined for a scoring barraage early in this one, as they scored a total of nine goals over the first 10 minutes and three goals in the first minute-and-a-half. The Lady Petrels fell behind 2-0, then freshman Michelle Vasques drew the Lady Petrels to within a goal with a long run from midfield.
Berry scored another to go back up by two goals, but freshman Sydney Sparks quickly pulled Oglethorpe back to within one with a goal of her own. However, from that point, the Lady Vikings went on a four-goal run to take a 7-2 lead with 20:14 remaining in the first half.
The Lady Petrels scored twice in the next five minutes, Sparks tallying the first one and senior Katie Weeks scoring the second, bringing the score to 9-4 with 12:25 remaining in the half. But Berry scored five more times before the halftime break, driving their lead to 15-4.
This late-half run effectively put the Lady Petrels out of the game, and they did not score in the second half. Berry scored five more times, leading to the 20-5 final score.
Oglethorpe was outshot 27-9, including 24-7 on goal. Berry scooped up 14 ground balls to Oglethorpe's 10, and converted on 5-of-6 free-position shots to Oglethorpe's 0-for-1. The Lady Petrels turned the ball over 24 times to Berry's 12.
Sparks led the Lady Petrels with two goals on four shots, three of them on goal.
The Lady Petrels fall to 1-8 on the season. They will take the weekend off before going across town to take on Agnes Scott next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
