Women's Lacrosse Falls to Birmingham-Southern on Senior Day, 16-2
On a day during which the Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day and commemorated the careers of its inaugural senior class, they were outshone on the field by Birmingham-Southern, 16-2 in the season's final game on the new Oglethorpe Track and Field.
The team fell behind 2-0 early, but did pick up a goal to cut that deficit in half with 24:26 remaining in the first half. Junior Carissa Thomas tallied the goal for the Lady Petrels, her eighth of the season, to make the score 2-1.
However, Birmingham-Southern went on a goal-scoring rampage over the remainder of the first half, outscoring the Lady Petrels 8-0 over the rest of the period and leading 10-1 at halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Panthers slowed down somewhat, but still outscored Oglethorpe 6-1. The lone Oglethorpe goal came from senior Katie Weeks, who was honored during the Senior Day festivities earlier in the afternoon.
Defender Sarah Giles was also honored during Senior Day for her efforts during this inaugural women's lacrosse season.
Goalkeeper Hayley Flanagan stopped 12 shots for the Lady Petrels on the afternoon.
The loss drops the squad to 2-9 on the season, 0-4 in SAA competition. They will next take the field on Friday, when they travel to Jackson, Miss. for their final SAA game of the regular season against Millsaps. The game is scheduled to get underway at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
