The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team ended its season with a 23-7 loss at Millsaps in the SAA quarterfinals Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Petrels fell behind 2-0 in the first two minutes, but freshman Michelle Vasques scored a goal to draw the team back to within a single goal with 27 minutes left in the half. Later in the half, Vasques twice scored goals to draw the Lady Petrels back to within two. She scored with 20:37 remaining and with 13:19 left in the half. The second of those two goals cut the Lady Major lead to 5-3.
Millsaps scored three straight goals after that to take an 8-3 lead, but the Lady Petrels roared back with two straight goals of their own, Vasques coupling with fellow freshman Sydney Sparks to bring Oglethorpe back to within 8-5 with 4:36 left in the half.
However, Millsaps began pulling away at the end of the half going into the start of the second. They scored five straight goals, then after Sparks scored another goal with 20 minutes remaining in the game, went on an eight-goal run to put the game away.
The Lady Petrels got one more goal out of Vasques off a free-position shot, but that was it, and Millsaps cruised from there.
Vasques finished with five goals on the afternoon for the Lady Petrels, while Sparks netted two. Goalie Hayley Flanagan stopped 12 of the 35 shots she faced.
The team was outshot by Millsaps 44-22, and the Lady Majors scooped 25 ground balls to Oglethorpe's 16.
The loss means that the Lady Petrels end their inaugural season with a 3-11 record.
