Women's Lacrosse Drops Tight SAA Opener, 16-14
The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team fought back from behind against SAA opponent Hendrix Friday evening, but unfortunately ran out of time in the end, losing 16-14 to the visiting Warriors.
The Stormy Petrels fell behind 3-0 early, but quickly got consecutive goals from Carol Rubens, Michelle Vasques and Carissa Thomas to pull back even, 3-3, with 22:50 still left in the half. The Petrels were down just 6-5 late in the period when back-to-back goals from Hendrix suddenly made it an 8-5 game at halftime. Hendrix extended that lead to 12-6 early in the second half, but Oglethorpe mounted a comeback. They got three straight goals from Vasques and Sydney Sparks and pulled to within three, then after a Hendrix goal, the same two Petrels scored three straight again to bring Oglethorpe to within a single goal, 13-12, with 7:19 remaining. However, the Warriors scored three straight of their own after that, putting the Petrels behind the eight-ball. The home side did not quite have enough to get back over the hump, eventually falling by two goals.
Vasques played brilliantly for the Petrels, scoring six goals on seven shots, picking up five ground balls, causing three turnovers, and bagging seven draw controls, as well. Juliana Altman had a hat trick on seven shots, putting all seven on goal. She also picked up three draw controls.
The Petrels stayed in the game by going 5-for-6 on free-position shots, but Hendrix outshot the Petrels overall, 33-25.
The 0-2 Petrels now fall to 0-1 in SAA competition to start the season. They'll look to pick up their first win of the season when they take on Piedmont at Oglethorpe Track and Field Wednesday at 6 p.m.
