The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team fell behind the visiting Piedmont Lions early Wednesday evening and never could get back into the game, eventually falling 21-2 at Oglethorpe Track and Field.
The Stormy Petrels fell behind 8-0 very early, finding themselves behind by the eight-goal mark just 10 minutes into the game. They did play the rest of the half much more evenly, however, only getting outscored 3-2 for the remainder of the stanza. Senior Carissa Thomas picked up a pair of goals for the Petrels in the process and they were down 11-2 at the halftime break.
However, the visiting Lions outscored the Petrels 10-0 in the second half, leading to the 19-point victory.
Sophomore goalie Paige Falkowski stopped 18 shots and scooped six ground balls while causing four turnovers, but it wasn't enough to keep the Petrels in the game. Oglethorpe was outshot 48-8, including 39-5 on goal, and committed 18 turnovers to their opponents' 10. In addition, Piedmont scooped 19 ground balls to Oglethorpe's nine, secured 19 draw controls to Oglethorpe's six, was 6-for-10 on free position shots to Oglethorpe's 0-for-4, and was 5-for-5 on clear attempts to Oglethorpe's 7-for-19.
The 0-3 Petrels will now welcome SAA foe Millsaps onto Oglethorpe Track and Field at noon on Saturday for their second conference tilt of the season. They'll then travel to Huntingdon next Wednesday.
