Women's Lacrosse Drops Tough One to Millsaps

The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team fell to 0-2 in SAA play Saturday with a 15-14 loss to Millsaps at Oglethorpe Track and Field.

It was a tight contest throughout, but the Petrels had the lead for almost the entire game. They fell behind 1-0 early, but took the lead shortly thereafter. From there, the Petrels seemed to either have a small lead or the game was tied for the vast majority of the contest. The Petrels took a 7-4 lead late in the first half but the Majors came back with a three-goal volley of their own to tie the score at halftime, 7-7.

In the second half, the Petrels led by as many as three goals, as they had an 11-8 advantage early in the period. However, the Majors would come back to tie the score at 13-13, and then, after the Stormy Petrels briefly took the advantage back, they scored back-to-back goals to take a 15-14 lead. The Majors were able to hold on from there, handing the Petrels their second conference loss of the season.

The Petrels got five goals from sophomore attacker Michelle Vasques. She found the net on all five shots she took and caused five turnovers. Sophomore Sydney Sparks and senior Carissa Thomas added a hat trick each, Sparks putting five of her six shots on goal and Thomas four of her five.

Overall, the statistics proved to be relatively even. The Majors outshot the Petrels, 27-24, secured 15 draw controls to Oglehtorpe's 14 and forced 24 turnovers to the Petrels' 19.

The Stormy Petrels, who now drop to 0-4 overall, will next travel to Montgomery, Ala., to take on Huntingdon at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. They'll then return home next weekend to battle Augustana (Ill.).
