Despite a four-goal performance from senior Carissa Thomas and an improved performance overall, the Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team could not hold off home-standing LaGrange Thursday night in a 17-8 loss.
The four goals were a season high for Thomas, who did it on just five shots. She played a good all-around game, also picking up seven ground balls and causing two turnovers. Sophomore attacker Michelle Vasques scored two goals of her own while putting eight shots on goal and scooping six ground balls.
The Stormy Petrels had the better of much of the play statistically. They outshot LaGrange 33-30, scooped 35 ground balls to the Panthers' 29, and secured 12 draw controls to the home side's eight.
The Petrels went ahead 2-0 early on a couple of quick goals by Vasques and sophomore Sydney Sparks. However, the Panthers then embarked on a 9-0 run that wound up deciding the game. They led 9-2 with 7:20 remaining in the first half. The Petrels did score three straight to pull back to within four, 9-5, with 5:17 remaining in the half. Free-position goals by Vasques and Thomas were sandwiched around another Thomas goal to make up the run. LaGrange got a goal back before the half ended to take a 10-5 lead into the break.
In the second half, the two teams traded goals to begin the period. Thomas scored Oglethorpe's goal off an assist from Kellen Flatt. However, LaGrange put the game away with six straight goals, taking a 17-6 advantage with 10:09 remaining. Thomas and Flatt scored goals for the Petrels in the game's final four minutes.
The 0-7 Petrels will next travel to Birmingham, Ala., on Sunday to take on Birmingham-Southern in an SAA matchup. The game is scheduled to get started at 2 p.m. Eastern. They'll continue their SAA road trip next Thursday when they take on Berry at 3:30 p.m. in Mount Berry, Ga.
