The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day on Tuesday evening, as midfielder Carrisa Thomas was honored for her two years with the program. She picked up a goal on her night and caused two turnovers, but it wasn't enough as Buffalo State outgunned the Stormy Petrels, 21-4.
Sophomore Sydney Sparks also showed well for the Petrels, scoring a pair of goals on five shots. She also picked up five draw controls on the evening. Sophomore Michelle Vasques added another goal on two shots. She picked up four ground balls for the Petrels, as well. Sophomore goalie Paige Falkowski stopped 18 shots over the course of the game and scooped four ground balls of her own while causing three Bengals turnovers.
Unfortunately, Buffalo State proved to be just too much for the Petrels, as the home side was outscored 15-3 in the first half before settling down a little defensively in the second half, getting outscored 6-1 in that stanza. The visiting Bengals jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Sparks' first goal at the 17:53 mark of the first half. It was 12-1 in favor of Buffalo State when the Petrels scored two out of the next three goals. Thomas netted her Senior Day goal with 10:35 left in the half, and Vasques followed with 4:22 remaining. The Petrels' lone goal of the second half came on a Sparks free position shot with 11:40 remaining.
The Petrels were 1-of-1 on free position shots to the Bengals' 2-of-6, but were outshot 49-9 overall, were successful on just 6-of-23 clear attempts, and accrued seven draw controls to their opponents' 19.
The loss drops the Petrels to 0-11 on the season. They'll get back to SAA play this weekend, when they travel to Memphis, Tenn., to take on Rhodes at 2 p.m. Eastern.
