The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team tallied nine goals against Transylvania Sunday in Lexington, Ky., but could not get enough defensive stops to have a chance. They fell 20-9 to the home-standing Pioneers.
Down 2-0 early, Juliana Altman scored with 26:34 remaining in the first half to draw the Petrels to within one. However, the Petrels would be down 5-1 when Sydney Sparks scored their second goal with 21:10 left in the half, and down 7-2 when Michelle Vasques scored the third with 15:19 left. Oglethorpe got another goal from Sparks later in the half and an additional one from Vasques with eight seconds left, but found themselves down 12-5 going into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Petrels scored two of the first three goals, with Altman tallying the first and Vasques scoring on a free-position shot to make it 13-7 with 25:08 remaining. However, the Pioneer lead slowly built from there and they gradually pulled away. Oglethorpe got two more goals, one from Kellen Flatt and the other from Altman.
Altman and Vasques both finished the game with hat tricks on five shots on goal. Vasques went 5-for-5 in shots on goal, whereas Altman put five of her seven total shots on goal. Sparks scored two goals on 10 total shots, putting five of them on goal. Goalie Paige Falkowski led the team with seven ground balls, and also made 14 saves on the afternoon.
The Petrels grabbed 14 draw controls to their opponents' 17 and committed 18 turnovers to Transylvania's 13, but were outshot by a significant margin and were successful on less than half of their clear attemtps.
The loss drops the Petrels to 0-15 on the season. They'll now get set for the SAA playoffs, where they'll take on No. 1 seed Centre on Saturday back in Danville, Ky., as the No. 8 seed.
