The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team picked up their first victory of the year in their season opener Saturday on the Oglethorpe Track and Field, blowing out the visiting Truett-McConnell Bears 22-3. With the victory, the Stormy Petrels start the season 1-0.
Freshman attacker Elena Gierok had an outstanding performance with 5 goals, leading the way for the Petrels. Senior midfielder Michelle Shramek, freshman attacker Glenn Kaiser and freshman midfielder Jill Czaplinksi added 3 goals apiece, as well.
The Petrels controlled the game from the start, scoring seven unanswered goals within the first 10 minutes of the contest. Oglethorpe outshot their opponents 37-7 while recovering 18 draw controls and coming up with 21 ground balls to their opponent's 10. The Petrels were a perfect 12-for-12 on clear attempts while holding their opponent to just 9-for-22. They forced 24 Bear turnovers on the afternoon.
The home side began the game on a 7-goal run, taking complete control of the game at the outset. Truett McConnell answered with a marker of their own, but the Petrels came back with eight more goals in a row, building a 15-1 lead.The Petrels then outscored the Bears 7-1 over the course of the second half, getting goals from six different players in the process.
"It was great to see our hard work in preseason pay off on the field this afternoon!" said Oglethorpe head coach Shawna Block, who picked up her first career victory as a collegiate head coach in her first career game. "The team is gelling and working well together. I'll be interested to see what we can do against a tough Piedmont team."
The Petrels will travel to Demorest to take on Piedmont Tuesday at 5 p.m. before coming back home to play their first SAA contest against Centre Saturday at 1 p.m. from the Oglethorpe Track and Field.
