Freshman defender Dreshona Mapps-Whitmore of the Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team earned SAA Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday from the league office for her efforts in her first career collegiate game, a 22-3 victory over Truett McConnell on Saturday at the Oglethorpe Track and Field.
Mapps-Whitmore caused 4 turnovers on the afternoon while scooping 4 ground balls in the team's victory over the visiting Bears. She also scored on her only shot of the contest. She's tied for first in the league with her teammate Michelle Shramek in caused turnovers after one game, with both players having tallied 4.
"As a freshman, Dre has shown maturity and leadership beyond my expectations," said Oglethorpe head coach Shawna Block. "She is a hustler and a very coachable player. I'm thrilled that the conference has bestowed this honor on her."
Mapps-Whitmore and the rest of the Petrels will travel to Demorest on Tuesday evening to take on in-state opponent Piedmont at 5 p.m. After that, they'll return home for their SAA opener, a Saturday showdown with Centre at 1 p.m.
