The Oglethorpe women's soccer team started their season off on the right foot this week, defeating crosstown Spelman, 2-1, to open the season.
The game was scoreless throughout most of the first half, but Lexie Craig gave the Petrels a huge boost in the 45th minute. She scored off an assist from Jessie Gregerson to give the Petrels a 1-0 lead just 30 seconds from halftime.
The Petrels tallied again just after halftime when Craig scored her second goal of the game in the 47th minute. These two goals two minutes apart, separated by halftime, gave Oglethorpe complete control of the game.
Spelman would bring themselves back to within a goal in the 75th minute, but the Petrels were able to hang on for the 2-1 win.
The Petrels outshot Spelman 17-8, 10-6 on goal. Goalkeeper Bailey Evans stopped five shots to help preserve the victory.
The win moved the Petrels to 1-0 on the season, with games against Toccoa Falls and Mississippi College ahead this week.
