Shots (on goal)
The Oglethorpe women's soccer team lost their home opener to Mississippi College Saturday by the score of 5-0 on a rainy day in Atlanta.
The Petrels fell behind early, giving up goals in the second, sixth and ninth minutes. When a thunderstorm rolled through 11 minutes into the game, causing a delay, the Petrels were already behind 3-0.
When the two teams came back from the weather delay, Oglethorpe impoved their play considerably, seeing more possession and playing better defensively, but the damage was already done. They gave up another goal in the 24th minute, then went through the vast majority of the second half without allowing a goal, conceding the final goal in the 84th minute.
The Petrels were outshot by the Choctaws 26-5, 16-2 on goal, and attained six corner kicks to Oglethorpe's two. Oglethorpe starting goalkeeper Bailey Evans stopped nine shots.
The Petrels will next be in action Thursday at 7 p.m., when they will travel across the state to take on LaGrange.
