The SAA named Oglethorpe freshman midfielder Maddie Cornell as the SAA Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday for her efforts in a 2-1 season-opening victory over Agnes Scott on Friday. Cornell proved a key factor in the Stormy Petrels winning their season opener, as she both scored and tallied an assist in the contest, which was her first collegiate game.
Cornell played with the poise of an upperclassman, though, even with the Petrels down a goal early. With the team down 1-0, Cornell followed a Jalisa Kassam free kick into the box and pounced when the Agnes Scott goalkeeper was unable to catch the ball cleanly, tying the game at 1-1. Later in the game, Cornell sent in a perfect corner kick that Petrel striker Medina Besic only had to redirect toward goal from the near post. That goal gave the Petrels a lead which they would never relinquish.
"I'm happy for Maddie," said Oglethorpe head coach Wes Anania. "It's a great honor to receive for her first collegiate game. I thought she and the whole team responded well to falling down a goal early, and we were able to come away with a win in our season opener. I'm looking forward to seeing how Maddie progresses as her freshman season continues."
Cornell and the rest of the Petrels will be in action again at the Oglethorpe Track and Field Wednesday evening, when they take on in-state opponent Wesleyan at 7 p.m. After that, the Petrels will head north to Dayton, Tennessee, for a battle with NAIA opponent Bryan Friday at 5 p.m.
