Women's Soccer Drops Tough 1-0 Decision to Huntingdon

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team played a largely even matchup with the visiting Huntingdon Hawks Wednesday night at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, but a second-half goal from Huntingdon sunk the Stormy Petrels in a 1-0 defeat. The loss dropped the Petrels to 2-2 on the young season.

The Petrels controlled more of the possession in the first half, and had a shot advantage to show for it. They outshot the Hawks 6-2 in the opening period, but were unable to break through with an opening tally. Huntingdon made them pay in the 53rd minute, opening the scoring with a cross from the right flank that forward Elena Guy was able to redirect into the goal, giving them a 1-0 advantage.

From there, Oglethorpe looked to get forward into the attack to equalize the scoreline. Sophomore forward Kayla Trice had a 1-on-1 effort saved by Huntingdon goalkeeper Kylie Kersh early in the half, while freshman forward Ana Shults tried to loft the ball over Kersh and a pack of Hawks defenders into an open net, but put her effort just wide in the 70th minute. The Petrels had another opportunity in the final 10 minutes with the Huntingdon goalkeeper out of position, but the Hawks defense closed down on Trice before she was able to get her shot off. The visitors held on for the 1-0 victory in the end.

Oglethorpe outshot the Hawks 11-8 for the game overall, with the count 5-5 for shots on goal. The Petrels took the game's only corner kick. Bolas made four saves in the defeat, keeping her team in the contest. Trice led the Petrels with three shots fired, putting two of them on target.

"I thought we gave a good effort," said Oglethorpe head coach Wes Anania, "but just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net tonight. We had several opportunities, but just didn't take advantage, while they took advantage of one of theirs. We'll learn from it and move onto our next game."

The Petrels will travel to Lookout Mountain for their next contest, as they'll take on in-state opponent Covenant Saturday at 5 p.m. They'll return home the following weekend for their SAA opener against Centre. That matchup will take place Sept. 23 at 1 p.m.
