The 2012 women's tennis season came to a conclusion on Sunday afternoon as the squad battled hard to come home with an 8th place finish in the rugged SCAC.
The long weekend began with the 9th seeded women topping the 8th seeded Kangaroos of Austin College 6-3. The Petrels secured two of the three doubles points to set up the victory. In singles play, the netters got straight sets wins from No. 1 Francis, No. 3 Danielson and No. 5 Siess to secure the match. Sarah Duff won a three-setter at No. 4 by rallying from down a set 4-6, 6-2. 6-3. Complete Austin match results can be found here.
The Petrels advanced to play eventual tournament winner and No. 1 overall seed Trinity later on Friday afternoon and were wiped out 9-0. Complete match results against the Tigers can be found here.
On Saturday, the netters were topped by the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern 6-3. Siess and Danielson combined to win Oglethorpe's lone point in doubles with an 8-2 win at No. 3. In singles play, Francis and Siess scored wins at No.'s 1 and 5, respectively, but that was all the scoring the Petrels could muster against Birmingham. On Sunday, the Petrels squared off with Rhodes College in the 7th/8th place match which the Lynx won handily, 7-2. Francis and Danielson were able to secure points in their singles matches at No.'s 1 and 3 but the rest of the squad was felled in straight sets. With the result against the Lynx, Oglethorpe finished the season in 8th place overall.
The women finished with an 8-16 overall record but will be buoyed by the return of 5 of their top 7 players next fall.
