The Oglethorpe women's tennis team fell to in-state rival Berry 9-0 Thursday afternoon in their SAA opener.
The Lady Petrels fell behind 3-0 after the doubles competition with the doubles team of sophomore Tricia Groover and freshman Hailey Bowers holding their match close, eventually falling 8-5 to the team from the home-standing Lady Vikings.
Up 3-0, Berry quickly put the dual match away with two quick singles victories in the Nos. 1 and 2 slots, securing the victory at 5-0.
Junior Kate Siess took her opponent to the limit in the No. 5 singles match to end the day. She won the first set, 7-6, after a 7-4 win in the tiebreak. Her opponent came back with a 6-1 victory in the second set. With the dual match already decided, a first-to-10 super-tiebreak was employed to decide the match. Siess hung tough in the breaker, but eventually lost, 10-5.
The dual match loss drops the Lady Petrels to 1-4 on the season, now 0-1 in SAA competition. They will next take the court Saturday morning, when they play their final dual match before embarking on their spring break trip to Orlando. Christopher Newport visits the Downing Howell Courts to take on the Lady Petrels at 9 a.m.
