The Oglethorpe women's tennis team started their run at the Spring Break Sports competition in Orlando with a 6-3 loss to Grinnell Monday night.
After losing at No. 1 doubles, the team came back to tie the dual match 1-1 when Tricia Groover and Hailey Bowers secured the No. 3 doubles match, 8-3. However, Grinnell took the lead right back by taking the other doubles match, making it 2-1 in the Pioneers' favor going into singles.
Grinnell took the No. 2 singles match first, giving their team a 3-1 overall lead. The Lady Petrels got one back, though, when Katarina Te took the No. 5 singles match in a clean sweep, 6-0, 6-0. This made the overall score 3-2 in favor of Grinnell.
The Lady Pioneers brought the dual match to the brink with a victory at No. 4, but Oglethorpe stayed in it when MaryAnne Hafen pulled down a three-set marathon at No. 3, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. Grinnell still held a 4-3 lead, though, and after fighting hard at No. 1 singles, Katherine Walker succumbed in 7-5, 6-1, clinching the dual match for Grinnell. The Lady Pioneers took the remaining match as well, leading to the final 6-3 scoreline.
With the loss, the Lady Petrels fall to 1-7 on the season. They play twice today, taking on Ozarks this morning and then going up against Otterbein this afternoon in Orlando.
