The Oglethorpe women's tennis team continued its excellent run of play Saturday at the Downing Howell Courts, defeating Oxford 9-0 to improve to 7-3 on the season overall. The Stormy Petrels have won five of their last six matches, including three victories in a row dating back to March 19 at Berry.
The Petrels got off to an outstanding start in doubles, as the regionally-ranked doubles tandem of junior Caroline Johnson and freshman Hannah Dattilo beat Oxford's No. 1 doubles team 8-1. The No. 2 team of sophomore Shannon Cruz and junior Halley Sickling took their doubles contest by the same scoreline to put Oglethorpe up 3-0 after they won their No. 3 match in a walkover.
Headed to singles, the Petrels needed just one of the six matches after they won the No. 6 match in a walkover, too. Oglethorpe got that victory from sophomore Delaney Abood at No. 5, as she won her match 6-1, 6-1. After clinching the dual match, the Petrels picked up several other victories. Johnson took the top singles match 6-2, 6-0. Dattilo took the No. 2 match 6-1, 6-1, while senior Ingrid Wilcox won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4. Finally, Cruz won her match at No. 3 in a third-set super-tiebreak. After dropping the second set, she outlasted her opponent 12-10 in the tiebreaker. She won the match 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (12-10).
"This was a good match for us," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell. "They're a very good team in the junior college ranks, and our top two doubles teams played their best matches of the season. Caroline and Hannah, especially, took their momentum from that and carried it over to the singles match."
The Petrels will next be in action on Friday, when they'll return to the Downing Howell Courts to take on Brooklyn at 1 p.m. After that, they'll go on the road in SAA play.
