The Oglethorpe women's tennis team saw their season come to an end Saturday afternoon at Burns Park Tennis Center in North Little Rock, Arkansas, as they fell to No. 2 seed Centre 5-0 in the SAA semifinals. The third-seeded Stormy Petrels just could not find any answers for an extremely solid Colonels team, and finished their season with a 13-6 overall record.
The Petrels had a tough battle with No. 6 seed Berry on Friday, having to come back for a 5-3 victory, while Centre blanked No. 7 seed Hendrix 5-0. That and the Colonels' high level of play on Saturday combined to put the Petrels behind the eight-ball from the beginning. Oglethorpe lost all three doubles matches 8-2, with junior Caroline Johnson and sophomore Hannah Dattilo falling at No. 1, sophomore Shannon Cruz and freshman Taylor Cranford at No. 2, and senior Ingrid Wilcox and junior Halley Sickling at No. 3.
Up 3-0 headed to singles, Centre kept going from there. Dattilo fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 to make it 4-0, while Cruz dropped her No. 3 match 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the dual match.
The four other singles matches went unfinished, as the dual match was only played to decision. However, the Petrels were down a set in all four remaining matches.
"Centre is a very good team, and they were just too strong for us today," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell. "We had a great run of five consecutive SAA wins for the first time. This team had a wonderful season and was a joy to coach! With seven of our top eight players back next year, hopefully we can have another fine season next year."
