Women's Tennis Falls Short against No. 38 Millsaps

The Oglethorpe women's tennis team fell to No. 38 Millsaps, 5-1, in a match that was started late due to cold conditions, and was played to decision Sunday in Jackson, Mississippi. The Petrels dropped two out of three doubles matches, picking up a win at No. 3 doubles, as junior Shannon Cruz and senior Halley Sickling won their match, 8-2. Senior Caroline Johnson and sophomore Hannah Dattilo battled in their match at No. 1, but came up short, 8-6.

Trailing 2-1 at the start of singles play, the Majors were able to pick up wins at Nos. 1, 5 and 6 singles to clinch the match. With the outcome decided, the other three singles matches were abandoned. Of those three matches, Millsaps was up a set in two of them.

Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell commented after the match, "We ran into a tough, solid team today and they were just too strong up and down the lineup. Caroline and Hannah almost gave us a great win at No. 1 doubles. That would've given us momentum going into singles. Millsaps was just too strong up and down throughout the lineup."

With the loss, the Petrels dropped to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in SAA play. Their final three regular season matches will be at home this week, starting with LaGrange on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. They'll celebrate the careers of Caroline Johnson and Halley Sickling during Senior Day festivities prior to the match. The Petrels will host Centre and Sewanee on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, rounding out the regular season.
