After setting a record which has stood for 12 years, sophomore captain Raven Foust capped one of the great days in Oglethorpe track history by anchoring the women's 4x400 relay team to its second school record in as many weeks as the Petrels completed its best performance ever in an indoor meet at yesterday's Vulcan Classic in Birmingham.
Foust broke Jill Orlando's 2000 mark in the open 400 and then lead Katy Galli, Chelcee Arnold and Sherry Blystone in setting the new relay standard. This was one of an unprecedented four records the Petrels broke at this meet. In addition to Foust, freshman Galli had a meet to remember by breaking her own triple jump record set back in December, and then set the new standard in the 60 meter hurdle race as well.
There were also two near misses by the men's team as the 4x400 team of freshmen Luq Mohammed, Jacob Bowman, Kylon Haugabook and Brandon Foster just missed the record while freshman Michael Caneega did the same in the open 3000 meters.
The Vulcan meet was the largest indoor event ever held in the southeast which featured the top Division I schools of the region and the Petrels more than held their own as every OU athlete who competed set a personal PR in their event, a development which this program has never experienced. Oglethorpe thus completes the indoor portion of their season and now prepares for their first outdoor meet at Millsaps on March 3rd.
