The 2012 outdoor track season opened strongly for the Stormy Petrel men's and women's track teams yesterday at the Mississippi College opener in Jackson, Mississippi.
Freshman Katy Galli of Hackenstown, N.J. continued her spectacular season by winning three events outright and breaking another school record. Galli won the long jump, triple jump and set a new school record in the 100 meter hurdles by running 15.99 while wining that event. Galli now owns four school records after competing in just four meets. The indoor triple jump, indoor 60 hurdles, outdoor 100 hurdles and a piece of 4x400 relay records all belong to her.
Sophomore Ky'Laine Rogers was another Petrel winner at the meet, winning the women's high jump with a PR of 5.2.75 inches.
There were also a number of other personal bests set by Petrel athletes at the meet. Freshmen Luq Mohammed and Kylon Haugabook had PR's in the 200 and 400, Michael Caneega in the 1500 and 800, Bianca Hernould in the 5000, Khadija Nisar in the 1500, Aniysa Taylor in the 200 and Kai Owens, Austin Collier and Edgardo Martinez in the discus and javelin. Freshman McKenna Bondarenko had a great outdoor debut by scoring in both the discus and javelin events while senior Liz Weber and freshman Brandon Foster had PR's in their throwing events as well.
There was no team scoring in this meet which featured 10 teams from an array of D-II and D-III schools. The Petrels now turn right around to try to keep the momentum going next weekend at the Southern Classic in Birmingham, Alabama.
