Track Petrels Take to Podium at SCAC Championships
The podium at the SCAC championships yesterday in Birmingham was crowded with Stormy Petrel women claiming their awards after a successful two days at the 2012 event.
The women's 4x100 relay team consisting of junior Sherry Blystone and sophomores Kyana Jenkins, Ky'Laine Rogers and Raven Foust had the highest relay finish in school history by finishing a close second to national leader Rhodes. Rogers also scored in the 100 and 200 meter dashes and the high jump, while captain Raven Foust also scored in the high jump as well.
Freshman Katy Galli concluded a spectacular first year by breaking her own school record twice in the 100 meter hurdles by running a 15.69 in the preliminaries and then breaking it again in the final with a 15.44. Galli's second place finish was right behind national champion Tiarra Goode's conference record breaking victory. Galli also made the podium again with her third place finish in the triple jump, and also scored with a personal record in the 400 meter hurdles. Additionally, she was part of the 4x400 team which scored in the relay. Galli's first year concludes with 6 indoor and outdoor school records.
Freshman McKenna Bondarenko was the Petrel surprise of the meet in the javelin throw. Seeded last in a field of 16 women, Bondarenko took fifth and threw 32.65 meters, an improvement of an amazing 9 meters. The women's team finished 8th overall, the same as last year, but scored a higher point total in a much tougher conference.
The men's team, consisting exclusively of freshman, struggled to finish 12th in the meet, but had some highlights. Freshman Michael Caneega ran personal records in both the 3000 steeple and took 5 seconds off his 800 meter time in just finishing off the podium. Both relay teams just missed scoring by finishing 9th, and the throwers of Edgardo Martinez, Kai Owens and Austin Collier all had their best throwing days of the season.
