Arielle Shaw Qualifies for Second Consecutive NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Sophomore Arielle Shaw of the Oglethorpe track and field team officially qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the triple jump competition Saturday, marking her second consecutive trip to the national meet in that discipline and the fourth year in a row that a member of the Stormy Petrels has qualified. The qualifier has competed in the triple jump in each of the four years (Katy Galli, 2014-15).

Shaw qualified in 15th position in the triple jump, putting up a season-best jump of 38 feet, 8.25 inches at the Torrin Lawrence Memorial in Athens on May 6. For each individual women's event, the participants with the top 22 marks qualified for the national competition.

Shaw had an excellent outdoor season, taking All-SAA Second Team honors for the second consecutive year, finishing second in the triple jump at the SAA Track and Field Championships with a leap of 36-7.5. She also finished first in the triple jump at the Mountain Laurel Invitational and Victor Icebreaker Duals; second at the Hilltop Classic; third at the Torrin Lawrence Memorial, where she recorded her qualifying jump; and fourth at the Emory Classic. She also finished third in the long jump at the conference meet.

"As a coaching staff, we are super-proud that Arielle has qualified for her second straight NCAA championship meet!" said Oglethorpe head coach Kirk Shellhouse. "She has worked hard over the indoor and outdoor seasons to accomplish her short-term and long-term goals. There was some adversity she had to overcome this year, and she did an amazing job staying focused and determined to qualify for the NCAAs again. It will be exciting to see how she can compete against the nation's best triple jumpers again!"

The Oglethorpe sophomore will be joined by a familiar foe at the national event, as Victoria Amadi of Hendrix qualified in third position at 40-2.75. The top national qualifier, Alexa Wandy of SUNY Geneseo, posted a mark of 41-11.5, while the last qualifier, Betsy Schreier of Wisconsin-La Crosse, recorded a season-best jump of 38-4.

The NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships are set to take place May 25 through 27 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The women's triple jump competition will take place on Saturday, May 27, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
