Petrels Find Going Tough in Texas
Oglethorpe went 1-4 this past week, topping Reinhardt (W, 3-0) before losing all four weekend SCAC matches against tough competition. The Petrels avenged a loss from earlier in the season to the Eagles to show the strides they've made with the sweep (25-19, 25-18, 25-19) before dropping four straight in Texas.
The Petrels found the going much tougher against the four Texas schools they faced over the weekend, losing to Southwestern (L, 3-0), Austin (L, 3-1), Dallas (L, 3-2) and Trinity (L, 3-0). The Pirates slipped past the Petrels rather easily (25-20, 25-13, 25-20) in Saturday's first match. McKenna Bondarenko led the OU attack with 8 kills while Anna Marie Disalvo had 7 kills and 8 digs in the loss.
The Petrels were able to take a set off of the Kangaroos in Saturday's nightcap before falling (25-16, 20-25, 25-18, 25-17). Disalvo was again a force for Oglethorpe, smashing 13 kills and recording 12 digs. Molly Buckner also turned in a fine effort with 13 kills and 11 digs while Katherine Cassell turned in a team-high 15 digs.
In Sunday's opener, the Petrels flirted with a win over Dallas by taking a 2-0 lead before going down in 5 sets (24-26, 17-25, 25-19, 25-22, 16-14). Disalvo notched 19 kills and 16 digs in the heartbreaking loss and Brittin Dawson added 37 assists in the narrow defeat. The weekend concluded with a 3-0 sweep at the hands of nationally ranked Trinity (25- 12, 25-22, 25-12). Disalvo turned in team-highs in both kills (12) and digs (9) but it was not enough to overcome the Tiger attack.
With the results Oglethorpe is now 6-18 on the season. The Petrels travel to face Brenau this Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
