The Oglethorpe volleyball team dropped an SAA contest to Birmingham Southern Sunday afternoon, 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 16-25, 25-17).
Birmingham Southern took the first set wire-to-wire. In the second set, the Petrels fell behind 13-11, but came back to take a 14-13 lead. However, the visiting Panthers followed with a 10-point run, taking a 23-14 lead. They would cruise to the two-set lead from there.
However, in the third set, the Lady Petrels dominated from the start. They never trailed in the set, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Then a 9-3 run helped them build a 10-point lead, 20-10. From there, though the Panthers mounted a bit of a comeback, the Lady Petrels still closed out the set relatively easily, 25-16.
Oglethorpe fought hard in the fourth and final set. Though they fell behind 4-0, they pulled back to within two points in the middle of the set. However, leading 16-14, Birmingham Southern went on an 8-2 run to take a 24-16 lead and put away the match.
The loss drops the Lady Petrels to 2-7 on the season, 0-7 in SAA play. They will next take the court Wednesday evening, when they will travel to Lookout Mountain, Ga. to take on Covenant. The match will start at 7 p.m.
