The Oglethorpe volleyball team lost, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-17), to Millsaps in the quarterfinals of the SAA Tournament Friday afternoon, ending their season with a 9-16 record.
The Lady Petrels were behind the eight-ball right from the beginning against No. 2 seed Millsaps, who entered the tournament with a record of 24-6. In the first set, Oglethorpe took a 1-0 lead, but that was their only lead of the set. They would pull back to within as close as 9-8, but Millsaps pulled away from there relatively easily for the 25-16 win and the 1-0 lead.
In the second set, the Lady Petrels had much the same problem. Their only lead in the set was at 2-1, and the set was tied at 4-4. From there, the Majors went on an 8-1 run to establish their dominance in the set, going on to win, 25-17 and take a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Petrels fought valiantly in the third and final set, knowing that their season was on-the-line. They took an early 5-3 lead, and then when Millsaps came back quickly to tie it at 5-5, Oglethorpe went on another mini-run to take an 8-5 lead. But after Millsaps came back to tie it at 10-10, they went on a 5-2 mini-run to take the lead, and then on a devastating 7-0 run to ensure the straight-set victory.
Outside hitter McKenna Bondarenko led the Lady Petrels with eight kills, and also contributed six digs. Libero Megan MaKuck led the team with 11 digs on the afternoon, and setter Anna Marie Disalvo passed out 10 assists. Outside hitter Erin Shelton contributed six kills and eight digs.
The Lady Petrels finish the season 9-16. They compiled a 2-12 record in SAA conference play.
