The Oglethorpe volleyball team had a tough evening Wednesday in Mount Berry, as they fell 3-0 in their conference opener to the homestanding Berry Vikings. The Stormy Petrels got behind the eight-ball early and couldn't recover against the high-powered home team. The defeat dropped Oglethorpe to 2-3 on the season overall.
The Petrels did get some good individual performances, as freshman outside hitter Jacoby Sims led the team with 10 kills while recording seven digs. Senior setter Jordan Jones passed out 14 assists, while sophomore libero Taryn North led all participants with 10 digs. However, it wasn't enough to overcome Berry in the match.
The Vikings started the match on a 14-5 run, and after trading points for a stretch, closed the Petrels out with a 9-1 run to take the first set 25-10. Things didn't go much better for Oglethorpe in the second set, as they were outscored 25-6 in the period overall, including a 14-0 run at one point.
Oglethorpe didn't back down, though, playing better in the third stanza. They built a 9-6 advantage before Berry answered with a four-point run to take a 10-9 lead. A 7-1 Berry run gave them a 17-12 advantage, though, as they began to assert control of the set. The teams traded points for awhile, with Oglethorpe cutting their deficit to four points, 21-17. However, the Vikings ran off four consecutive points of their own to close out the set, 25-17, clinching the match.
"We didn't play as well as we would've liked today," said Oglethorpe head coach Joseph Goodson. "There's still a lot of volleyball left to play, though, including a rematch with this Berry team later in the month. We've just got to keep plugging along, and I think we'll start to see some better results."
The Petrels will remain on the road in SAA play over the weekend. They'll travel to Alabama to take on Birmingham-Southern Saturday at 2 p.m. Eastern, then continue to Jackson, Mississippi, to take on Millsaps at 1 p.m. Eastern on Sunday.
