The Oglethorpe volleyball team fell 3-0 in an SAA road match against Birmingham-Southern Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama. The Stormy Petrels put together a competitive first set, falling 25-22 to the homestanding Panthers, but dropped the final two 25-15 and 25-13, respectively. The defeat dropped the team to 2-4 on the season overall and 0-2 in SAA play.

The Petrels led 5-2 early in the opening set, but Birmingham-Southern fought back to tie the score at 5-5. The two teams traded points for awhile, making the score 8-8, before the Panthers went on a 5-1 minirun to push out to a 13-9 advantage. They continued pushing their advantage, making it 19-14 later in the set, before a three-point Oglethorpe run cut the Birmingham-Southern lead to two, 19-17. The teams continued to trade points down the stretch, but the Petrels were never able to work their way back to even, and fell 25-22.

The second set featured the Panthers slowly pulling out to a big lead. They built a 20-9 advantage by the end of their set-opening run, and though Oglethorpe scored six of the next nine points to cut the BSC advantage to 23-15, the home team finished the next two to put it away, 25-15.

The third set didn't go much better for the visitors, as Birmingham-Southern started on 10-3 run, then continued with a 10-4 stretch to make it 20-7. They cruised to a 25-13 victory from there, clinching the match.

Sophomore libero Taryn North led all participants with 15 digs, while senior setter Jordan Jones and freshman setter Malisa Reichard combined for 22 assists, recording 11 each.

"Birmingham-Southern is a good team, and they showed that today," said Oglethorpe head coach Joseph Goodson. "We need to move on from this match quickly, because we have another one on the road against a tough Millsaps team. We'll be ready for tomorrow."

The Petrels will take on Millsaps in Jackson, Mississippi, at 1 p.m. Eastern. After that, they'll return home for three straight conference matches against Rhodes, Hendrix and Berry.
