The Oglethorpe volleyball team hung tough in a three-set match with the visiting Sewanee Tigers on Sunday, but fell in all three stanzas to lose 3-0. The defeat dropped the Stormy Petrels to 2-10 on the season overall and 0-8 in SAA play.
The Petrels jumped ahead early in the first set, taking a 4-1 lead over the first five points. Sewanee quickly came back with a 4-1 stretch of their own to tie the score 5-5. Then, after a couple of points by Oglethorpe, they pushed out on a 4-0 run to take a 9-7 edge. The teams traded points for awhile, with Oglethorpe slowly pushing back into it and taking a 16-15 lead. The Tigers took control of the set from there, however, embarking on a 10-2 run to close the set with a 25-18 win.
In the second set, Sewanee went on an 11-3 run early in the stanza to take an 11-5 lead. The Petrels came back with three consecutive points to cut the Tigers' lead to 12-9, but the home team responded with a 7-3 run to push their lead out 19-12. Oglethorpe responded with a 6-1 run to get back into the set, cutting the Sewanee advantage to 20-18. A 4-1 mini-run from Sewanee gave them a 24-19 lead, giving them set point. The visitors did not go quietly, though, as they ran off five consecutive points to come all the way back and tie it, 24-24. The Tigers finished the final two points, though, to win 26-24.
Sewanee got out to a big lead to start the first set, holding a 9-1 advantage early on. Oglethorpe fought back from there with a 13-4 run and took the lead in the set for the first time, holding a 14-13 advantage midway through the stanza. The teams traded points for a time, leading to an 18-18 deadlock. From there, though, the home side ran off five consecutive points to take a 23-18 advantage. Three straight Oglethorpe points got them back into it at 23-21, but Sewanee was able to finish the set with consecutive points from there, taking the frame 25-21.
Junior outside hitter Santreece Stephens led the team with 12 kills, hitting .310 in the process with just three attack errors over 29 attempts. Senior setter Jordan Jones led all participants with 29 assists, while sophomore libero Taryn North led the team with 13 digs. Junior middle hitter Ashlee Tolbert led the squad with three total blocks. Freshman defensive specialist Mary Scott Hollingsworth contributed 10 digs of her own.
"We're not getting results right now," said Oglethorpe head coach Joseph Goodson, "but I still think we're moving in the right direction. We just have to keep at it as a team, keep plugging along, and I think that the results will eventually come. We've still got a bunch of matches remaining this season, so there's plenty of time to get this turned around and start seeing better results."
The Petrels will remain on the road over the course of the coming week. They'll head across town to Decatur on Thursday, where they'll engage in a tri-match with host Agnes Scott at 4 p.m., then take on No. 3 Emory at 6 p.m. After that, they'll head to Conway, Arkansas, for a Saturday matchup with Hendrix, then to Memphis, Tennessee, on Sunday to go against Rhodes.
