The Oglethorpe volleyball team went 0-2 on the day at the Lakeland University Volleyball Tournament in Plymouth, Wisconsin, losing 3-0 to both Wisconsin-La Crosse and hosts Lakeland to fall to 0-4 on the young season.
In the Stormy Petrels' opening match of the day, they fell in straight sets to a Wisconsin-La Crosse team that received votes in the preseason Division III coaches' poll. It was a competitive first set, as the Petrels edged out to an early 7-6 advantage. A 9-2 run by the Eagles vaulted them ahead, 15-9, though, and Oglethorpe got no closer than four points after that, falling 25-17. The Petrels again took an early lead in the second set, but UW-La Crosse answered back in a big way, going on separate runs of five and six straight points. They eventually cruised to a 25-11 second-set win, then won by the same score in the third set after jumping out to a 7-1 lead at the outset.
Sophomore outside hitter Jacoby Sims had a solid match, recording six kills and five digs while hitting .250. She also recorded five kills and nine digs in the second match of the day against Lakeland. Coupled with her back-to-back, 11-kill matches against Wisconsin Lutheran and Cardinal Stritch on Friday, she earned a spot on the weekend's all-tournament team.
In the second match of the day against homestanding Lakeland, the Petrels fought hard in three competitive sets, but wound up falling 25-22, 30-28, 25-19. The first set was pretty much even throughout the opening half of the stanza, and Oglethorpe took a 12-10 lead over the Muskies. Lakeland responded with four straight points, but the Petrels vaulted right back ahead with five straight of their own, moving ahead, 17-14. The back-and-forth continued for the remainder of the set. The Muskies ran off six straight to go back ahead 20-17, then the Petrels finished five straight to take a 22-10 lead. However, Lakeland finished on a 5-point run of their own, finishing off the set, 25-22.
Oglethorpe took an 8-5 lead early in the tightly-contested second set, but Lakeland responded to take an 11-9 lead. The Petrels ran off four straight to give themselves a 13-11 advantage, but the Muskies recovered to tie it and the two teams traded points for much of the remainder of the set. Lakeland slowly pulled out to a lead, though, and eventually earned a set point up 24-20. The visitors stormed back from there, though, reeling off four straight points to tie it up at 24-24. The Muskies earned set point three more times, but the Petrels tied it back up on all three. Oglethorpe went ahead 28-27 and had a set point of their own, but Lakeland responded with three straight to win it 30-28.
Lakeland went ahead early in the third set and never relinquished the lead. They jumped out to a 12-4 advantage at the outset, then extended it out to a 19-9 lead. Oglethorpe pulled closer late in the set, but eventually fell 25-19.
Freshman setter Emma Williams passed out 12 assists for the Lakeland match, while sophomore defensive specialist Hailee Bugg collected a team-high 15 digs. Sophomore setter Malisa Reichard added 12 digs of her own.
