The Oglethorpe volleyball team faced off against the Birmingham-Southern Panthers. The Panthers came back from 20-16 down in the first set to win, then used the momentum from that to win the match 3-0. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 3-10 on the season overall and 1-3 in SAA play.
The Petrels were playing without junior outside hitter Briana Chin, who missed the match due to an illness, but hung tough in the opening set. Oglethorpe opened up the first set with a 3-0 lead, and maintained that lead for most of the set, going up 20-16. The Panthers then began clawing their way back into the game, eventually evening it up at 24-24. The two teams began swapping points, before Birmingham-Southern finally won the set, 27-25.
The second set saw the Petrels and Panthers trade points, with the score being knotted 5-5 after the first 10. Birmingham-Southern began to pull away after that, as they captured a 15-9 lead, and went on to win the set, 25-18.
Still fighting down 2-0, the Petrels found themselves in an early tie once again, as the set began 7-7. The Panthers were able to pull ahead one more time, though, as they capitalized off of a 13-9 lead, and won the set 25-19, completing the 3-0 sweep.
Jacoby Sims, sophomore outside hitter, put in another impressive performance, finishing the game with 8 kills and 20 digs. Freshman setter Grace Holder tallied 11 assists, while fellow freshman setter Emma Williams came up with 10.
The Petrels will look to improve to a 2-3 conference record on Sunday, as they host the Millsaps Majors to close out the weekend at 1 p.m. from Dorough Field House.
