Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets to No. 21 Berry

The Oglethorpe volleyball team had a tough matchup Wednesday night at Dorough Field House. They were able to hang tough against No. 21 Berry, especially in the second set, but fell 3-0 in the end. That result dropped the team to 3-14 on the year overall and 1-7 in SAA play.

The Stormy Petrels went on a 4-1 run to take a 4-3 lead early in the first set, but Berry responded with a huge 12-2 run to take a 15-6 lead. Oglethorpe responded with a 7-2 run of their own to make it 17-13, but Berry used a 5-1 stretch to take control of the stanza and won it, 25-17.

Berry jumped out to an 8-2 lead to start the second set, then continued with a 6-1 minirun to take a 14-6 lead. Oglethorpe responded in a big way, though, going on a 9-2 run to pull to within a single point, 16-15. A 4-1 stretch moved the Vikings back ahead by four, 20-16, but the home side finished five straight points to swing ahead, 21-20. The Petrels went back ahead at 23-22, but Berry finished the final three points of the set to win it, 25-23.

The two teams traded points early in the third set, and Berry had an 8-5 lead. Oglethorpe responded with a 6-1 burst to take the lead, 11-9, but Berry soon took control of the set. They outscored the Petrels 15-5 over the remainder of the stanza to win it, 25-17, and clinch the match in straight sets.

Freshman setter Emma Williams led the Petrels with 11 assists. Sophomore libero Hailee Bugg added 10 digs. 

The Petrels will be back in action on Saturday, when they welcome Centre to Dorough Field House for a 1 p.m. start. Oglethorpe will take on both Sewanee and No. 12 Emory in a tri-match on Sunday.
