The Oglethorpe volleyball team hung tough against a solid Hendrix squad Saturday afternoon at Dorough Field House, but the visiting Warriors prevailed 3-0 in the end. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 5-17 on the season overall and 2-9 in SAA play.
The first set started with back-and-forth play from both teams. The score was tied at 10-10 in the early-going, but Hendrix went on a 6-2 minirun to take a 16-12 lead. The Petrels scored three straight to pull to within one, 16-15, but Hendrix pushed it back out with a 4-1 run of their own, making it 21-17. It was 23-20 late in the set, but consecutive Warrior points gave them the first set, 25-20.
Hendrix got off to a good start in the second set, outscoring the Petrels 7-1 early. Oglethorpe scored three straight to cut the Hendrix lead to 12-9, but the visitors responded, rebuilding a 17-12 advantage. They then extended that lead with three consecutive points, making it 20-13. From there, they cruised to the 25-16 win in the second set.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle, and the Petrels used a 5-2 run to edge out to an 8-7 lead. Hendrix went on a 5-1 minirun, though, to push back out to a 13-9 advantage. The Petrels responded with an 8-1 stretch, vaulting into an 18-15 lead. Hendrix was able to turn the set back in their favor, though, as they went on a 7-1 run to go back ahead, 22-19. They eventually closed it out, 25-23.
The Petrels were led by junior outside hitter Brianna Chin, who recorded 9 kills and 7 digs. Freshman setters Emma Williams and Grace Holder each had 14 assists, while sophomore libero Hailee Bugg added 10 digs.
The Petrels will be back in action Sunday afternoon for their final home game of the season, when they take on Rhodes at 1 p.m. Before the match, the team will take part in Senior Day festivities.
